Building a Security Team, and then an Army

With Security people generally in short supply, how do you maximise the few people you have and make them a force multiplier in your organisation’s security maturity journey?
Learn from my experience at building teams which may give you some new ideas to make your journey smoother. Whether it be providing opportunities for people to widen their skills in a T shape (sometimes giving them a gentle nudge), changing public opinion of being the department of ‘no’ to supporting the business, and to just getting stuff done, inspiring employees to want to follow and be part of the team.
Below are the important points from each half of the talk:
Building a Team
- Start with why
- Play the infinite game
- Get to know yourself
- Get to know individuals
- Gradually build trust
- Don’t recruit people just like you
- Make T-shaped people
- Lead from the front, then support from the back
Building an Army
- Management must provide real support
- Repeat what you’ve done to a wider audience
- An engaged and supportive team is infectious
- Look for the next generation
- Start with the basics
- Celebrate the little things
